sheffield United came back from two goals down to triumph over Walsall tonight.
Three goals in 15 minutes were enough to seal a 3-2 win.
United had been unable to break through the Midlands side’s rearguard in the early exchanges at Bramall Lane, although Harry Maguire could have netted with a header inside the six-yard box which flew wide of the right-hand upright.
Matthew Lowton was booked as Blades saw out the first half without a breakthrough, thanks in part to goalie Jimmy Walker.
But Blades were hit by a double whammy after the resumption.
Chesterfield-born former Blade Kevan Hurst (46 mins) and Will Grigg (51) scored in a murderous five minutes for the Lane faithful.
United knew they had to dig deep and were back in it when Lowton scored from six yards on 59 minutes.
And they fought their way back to level standings when Lee Williamson, who had come on as sub for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, equalised on 68 minutes.
And on 74 minutes 33-year-old striker Cresswell popped in a penalty to take a stunning lead.
A memorable night for the 16,443 fans.
Sheffield United’s starting line up: Simonsen, Lowton, Jean-Francois, Collins, Maguire, Montgomery, Mendez-Laing, McDonald, Quinn, Slew, Cresswell. Subs: Long, Doyle, Williamson, Tonne, Bogdanovic.
