Nigel Adkins has revealed the final speech he will deliver to his players before today’s League One opener against Gillingham.
The Sheffield United manager, who takes charge of his first competitive fixture since being appointed nine weeks ago, told The Star that character and cameraderie are among its key themes.
“We’re on a journey,” Adkins said. “At times it will be plain sailing. At times it will be choppy
“But if we are all togetgher, we have an opportunity to be successful
“Sometimes you need a little adversity to bring you even closer as a group. However, we all want to achieve the same things and that’s why we stick together, as one, all the way through.”
“We know what we want to achieve and where we want to get to,” Adkins added. “Of course we want promotion, we make no secret about that but there are no guarantees and it’s not going to be easy.
“But, if we show all of those qualities, then we will be able to give it our best shot. Put ourselves in a position to achieve.”
United are expected to include new signings Billy Sharp, Conor Sammon and Martyn Woolford at Priestfield while Jamal Campbell-Ryce could return following injury.
The former Jamaica international has been receiving treatment on a hamstring complaint sustained during United’s recent friendly with Macclesfield Town.
“Jam has started running again,” Adkins said. “Whether or not he’ll be ready, we don’t know yet.
“We’ll see how he is and then go from there. Then, we’ll take a decision.”
