Nigel Adkins will be ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the quality of the squad he has inherited at Sheffield United, says one of his coaches.

The manager, who will get a closer look at the players when they report for training at the end of this month, has stated that he will give every player the opportunity to prove that they are good enough to be a part of his plans for the forthcoming season.

And according to Chris Morgan, Adkins will quickly find out that he has a lot of good players at his disposal.

“I’ve said this to him and I know speaking to the other staff as well we’ve all put across that he’s got a good squad,” said under 21s coach Morgan.

“He’s coming into a club where he’s got a damn good squad of players and I think he’ll be really pleasantly surprised by the quality that he’s got here already.”

While there is a belief that wholesale changes will not be needed, nor indeed funded, Morgan does admit last season’s lack of goals is an area that may be looked into.

“I definitely don’t want to be disrespectful to the strikers we have got, we have got people like Michael Higdon, Marc McNulty, Jamie Murphy can play up there, we have got good strikers,” he said.

“I do agree the strikers we have got here can score goals but I just think we have been chasing somebody who will excite supporters, excite players.”
