SCAWTHORPE Scorpions failed in their bid to lift the prestigious Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Tesco U13 Challenge Cup.
The Doncaster & District Boys’ League side were beaten 2-0 by by Staveley-based Handley Wood of the Rosehill Press Sheffield & District Junior Sunday League, at Grange Park.
Wood had the use of the slight slope in the first half and Scawthorpe keeper Sam Taylor had to make several fine saves.
Wood took a deserved lead on 26 minutes when Brandon Groves’s long free-kick from the half way line took an awkward bounce and sailed over the advancing Taylor into the net.
Scorpions searched for an equaliser and Luke Morgan’s close-range shot was just over. They went close after the break when Rory Millar’s snap shot from the edge of the box hit the bar.
Jordan Buckle’s clever cross into the Wood penalty area was scrambled clear at the third attempt but Wood increased their lead in the 55th minute.
After a long free-kick by Groves the ball fell nicely for Aidan McTighe, who scored from the edge of the area.
Wood keeper Thomas Hardwick went off injured afterdiving bravely at Mombili’s feet and his stand-in keeper Gianluca Santoro had to deal with two testing corners from Rory Millar.
