We have let boss and fans down says Revell

Alex Revell: We want to be in League One for the new stadium

STRIKER Alex Revell is adamant the players are to blame and not the manager for Rotherham United languishing in mid-table in League Two.

Some Millers fans are losing patience with Andy Scott’s inconsistent side and booed the players off at half-time and at the final whistle of their 2-1 defeat to Swindon Town last weekend.

Having been heavily backed in the transfer market by the Rotherham board, Scott’s men were expected to be one of the frontrunners for promotion at the beginning of the 2011/12 campaign.

But, having secured just four points from their last four outings, the Millers remain four behind seventh-placed Gillingham, who are occupying the final play-off position.

Question marks have been raised in certain quarters over Scott’s ability to turn around the club’s fortunes but Revell believes the squad have let him down by not performing to the best of their capabilities on a regular basis.

He told The Star: “I don’t think it [the fans booing] was harsh at all. At the end of the day, people come and pay good money to come and watch us play. The fans are desperate for the team to do well and so are we.

“We owe the manager a good performance against Port Vale. We have got some good management staff at the club and they prepare us thoroughly for every single game but as soon as we go over the white line, it is nothing to do with the gaffer. It is down to us then.

“The manager can only do so much. He trains us during the week and when we go out on the pitch we try to enforce his beliefs and what he wants us to do but we have not done that enough this year.

“There will be a lot of people doubting us so it is down to us to prove to the people who pay their money to come and support us that we have the fight and desire to win.”

Revell reckons Rotherham merited at least a point against the Robins but paid the price for starting slowly.

“We were poor first half but we created enough chances after the break to have got something,” he said. “We felt Swindon were there for the taking. They only had two shots in the first half and scored both of them.

“We were poor in the first half against Bradford as well so we know we need to go out and put a big performance in on Saturday.”

The former Leyton Orient player also accepts the Millers have to start picking up more points against the top teams in the division.

“We have not got a very good record against the top teams but I think the only one we deserved to lose was Southend who gave us an absolute hammering,” he said.

“It is frustrating because we all want to do well. We have all got this dream that we want to be in League One for the new stadium and I still believe we have got a good enough squad to go up. I think we have the team but the problem is we are not showing it.”
