The veteran striker who just keeps going

PAUL Warne keeps demonstrating that there's still plenty of life in the old - but very sprightly - dog that is the Rotherham United favourite.

The evergreen veteran has, at just turned 37, his best playing days behind him but a tremendous fitness dedication and a desire to play has led to him being hailed as "a great example" to his fellow pro's.

The popular striker made the most of his first start since breaking a leg last November by grabbing the winner at Hereford last Saturday and is eager for more.

He is on the Millers coaching staff, with responsibilities for fitness whilst his matchday duties include leading the pre-match warm-up routines but he is still part of the playing squad. "I've not pressed the gaffer for a start, being player-coach is a bit more difficult to go and knock on his door and say I want to play - but he knows I do anyway," said Paul.

"When I didn't get a chance at Peterborough recently I was furious and I didn't look at him or speak to him. I still went and did my job professionally for the lads but I was angry and thought that in view of pre-season and in training, I deserved to play.

"I still want to play until someone says I've no more games left," added Warne who returned to the club a year ago, his first spell highlighted by being a major part of the club's successive promotions in 2000 and 2001.

"I broke my leg in November and was devastated. I was desperate to get back but kept coming back too early.

"I want to keep fit; I run after games, I'll go on a run on a Sunday, I've got weights at home and just have to train to an intensity and it frustrates me that people with a lot more talent than me don't put the same amount of effort in.

"Yes, I've lost some pace but when I play I do run about and hope it's infectious with the rest of the lads. I don't want to be overlooked just because I'm 37 or as I'm coaching."
