Talented Kieran 'can kick on' in bid to make Olympic team with £500 grant

TOP Doncaster martial arts prospect, Kieran Burke, is celebrating after receiving a grant worth £500 from Doncaster College and SportsAid.

The grant will go towards the 15 year-old's training expenses.

The Sprotbrough-based youngster is already a regular in the Great Britain Cadet squad and struck gold at the British Championships in Manchester last year.

Kieran, who received his junior black belt in Tae Kwon Do at just nine, is now hoping to be selected for the European Junior Championships next year, which could lead him to cementing a place in Great Britain's Olympic squad for 2012.

He said: "I am really grateful for this grant because it means I can pay back some of the money the GB team spent on me during my time at the British Championships last year.

"I will also be able to kick on with my training now and work towards making the Olympic team, if not at 2012 then 2016.

"I have heard really good things about the College and most of my friends go there. I am thinking of going there to study when I leave school."

As his achievements in the sport have increased, charity organisation SportsAid has supported him with a grant to assist with the costs incurred in training and competing at a high level such as travel to national championships, equipment and coaching.

SportsAid Yorkshire and Humberside's Regional Development Manager Lynne Baird said: "Kieran has had some fantastic results recently. He has been identified through his governing body as being very talented and deserving enough to receive support to help him reach his potential.

"As a charity we work with many individuals and organisation to raise funds and we are grateful that Doncaster College has helped SportsAid to provide Kieran with a grant totalling 500.

Kieran is a fantastic prospect for the future – one who has his sights firmly set on representing his country at the Olympics."

The money was raised during events held at Doncaster College's High Melton campus last year.
