Scott looks to Bradley to end right-back woe

rotherham United manager Andy Scott has explained why he played midfielder Mark Bradley at right-back on his return after a lengthy absence at the weekend.

“I felt we had struggled in that position this season on a regular basis,” said the Millers manager.

“A lot of teams have been targeting that area.

“With a newcomer in Kieron Cadogan in front on that side, I felt it needed someone to back him up, be stronger and feed him the ball.

“I felt he (Bradley) had a decent game.

“He played there pre-season, he’s also played centre-back and he played at right-back in a private friendly we had last Monday at Doncaster and did all right.”

It could be that Bradley will now get a run in the right-back spot after he was preferred to regular Dale Tonge who had started 24 times in all this season.

Bradley came to Rotherham in 2010 from Walsall as a midfielder, having just gained his first full cap for Wales.

Under Scott, he began pre-season in the opening friendly in centre defence and was in that role when he suffered a serious shoulder injury back on October 4 against Sheffield United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. He suffered a dislocation and also a fracture and required surgery. Saturday was his return to the first team although he had been on the subs’ bench on a couple of occasions recently.

“If you understand the game and do your jobs right, then you can play people anywhere on the pitch; they should be able to understand the position,” added Scott.

Bradley was part of the 16th entirely different back four (in terms of personnel) the Millers have fielded in their 31 matches so far.

There will be another different one on Saturday at home to Torquay because Michael Raynes will serve a one-match ban for his dismissal in the closing moments at Dagenham for a second booking.

Johnny Mullins was out at Dagenham (although at the game) after failing a fitness test on a hamstring injury. It meant a debut for ex-Doncaster man Richard Naylor.
