Rovers chief confident of life on the up

TREVOR Milton, the man who was at the helm when Doncaster Rovers won the first of three promotions in six seasons, is upbeat about the club's prospects on their return to the second tier of English football after 50 years.

Now the club's president, Milton was chairman when they won promotion from the Conference via the inaugural play-offs in 2002-2003.

"That was a great day for the club and, of course, it didn't stop there with promotion as champions from the old Division Three and last season's promotion from League One after beating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley," he said.

"I had confidence that League One and Two were negotiable but this is the biggest jump so far. Having said that I think that we will do all right and prove the bookies wrong.

"I certainly don't think we will do a Scunthorpe and come straight back down.

"Scunthorpe were by far the best team to go up in 2006-2007 but unfortunately for them they didn't really invest in the team as we have done.

"We have brought in five or six good players to strengthen the squad but we have kept the majority of last season's players and I think that was the thing to do.

"I also think that we won promotion playing football which will stand us in good stead in the Championship because it means that we won't have to make big changes.

"If we can play the same sort of football in the Championship as we did in League One then I think we'll do okay."
