Raynes seeks pay-back for Paolo’s pantomime
Flashpoint: Millers boss Andy Scott reacts to Swindons antics, which have been condemned by Michael Raynes
AS THE Paolo Di Canio ‘circus’ prepares to roll into town, Rotherham United defender Michael Raynes has revenge on his mind.
In a fiery encounter at the County Ground back in September, it was Di Canio’s Swindon Town who ended the Millers unbeaten record in League Two, coming from behind twice to win 3-2.
Alex Revell marked his debut with two goals, Danny Schofield and Alberto Comazzi both saw red for two yellow cards while Di Canio’s touchline histrionics throughout the contest irked Rotherham manager Andy Scott.
In his post-match press conference, Scott complained of the Robins’ antics, saying: “It was like a circus and I didn’t enjoy what was going off.
“Their bench was like a pantomime but we knew that was what we were going to face.”
Raynes has told The Star the Millers players feel they have a score to settle with Di Canio’s side on Saturday.
“Some of the stuff that happened that day was not respectful and we want to make sure we put that right this weekend,” said the 6ft 4ins centre back.
One of Di Canio’s coaching staff and Comazzi also became embroiled in a dugout scuffle with Millers defender Dale Tonge.
Raynes said: “It is still one of them games we think about now and wonder how we didn’t get anything from it.
“I thought we did enough to win the game but the sending off and a couple of defensive mistakes cost us.”
Swindon sit in fourth position in the bottom tier of the Football League, six points
adrift of the automatic promotion placings and have lost just once in their last 19 outings. Di
Canio’s high-riding team have also reached the Southern Area Final of the
Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and the fourth round of the FA Cup in a stellar season.
“Swindon kicked on after beating us and we went the opposite way,” said Raynes. “Hopefully we can beat them and get back in the mix.”
