New covers fail to save Millers

THE new pitch covers that the Football League have instructed clubs to use this season were unable to save Rotherham United’s home game against Torquay.

The Don Valley Stadium pitch, covered all week, was perfectly playable on Thursday.

The covers offer protection to around minus five deg C but the overnight temperatures plummeted much lower and yesterday, with the pitch frozen and the freeze to go on, the club called in League ref Jock Waugh, from Sheffield, who inspected it and called the game off.
