Millers take good and bad from ‘off’ decision
THE postponement of Rotherham United’s game this afternoon was something of a double-edged sword for boss Andy Scott.
It ended the prospect of Richard Naylor and Mark Bradley building on the game time they managed last week after both hadn’t played league football for a while but it meant extra time for recovery for Johnny Mullins and Gareth Evans.
The decision to call off today’s home game with Torquay United became a formality once Millers officials arrived at a frozen Don Valley Stadium yesterday morning.
The plummeting temperatures overnight had considerably hardened up a surface that on Thursday was perfectly playable.
The pitch had been protected all week with covers that work down to minus five degrees C but the severity of the freeze on Thursday night meant the ‘off’ decision was expected when one of Sheffield’s Football League referees, Jock Waugh, made the inspection at 11am yesterday.
Former Doncaster man Naylor, out since November, made his debut at Dagenham last Saturday while Bradley made his return after being out since the beginning of October.
Defender Mullins missed the Dagenham game with a hamstring injury and a doubt remained over him. Likewise Evans who has been improving as he overcomes a back proble . It wasn’t clear if he wouldhave been able to return to the squad.
