Millers captain ready for selection battle

A FEAR of being dropped drives on Rotherham United captain Ryan Cresswell.

With Nick Fenton having recovered from his troublesome calf injury, Millers boss Ronnie Moore has an embarrassment of riches at the heart of his defence.

Cresswell, scorer of two goals in seven starts since swapping Gigg Lane for the Don Valley Stadium in the summer, has been solid alongside loanee Exodus Geohaghon. In tandem, they have helped the team keep three shut outs.

But Moore will shortly face a selection dilemma following the return of Fenton at Shrewsbury. The experienced defender made his first appearance since the Play-Off final as a late second-half substitute in the club's 1-0 loss at the Shrews, having shaken off the calf knock which he sustained in the friendly at Alfreton on July 27.

Even though Dale Tonge remains a long-term absentee with a metatarsal problem, Moore will also have to choose between Johnny Mullins and Dean Holden at right-back when Rotherham entertain Burton on Saturday.

Swinton-born Cresswell is refusing to take his place in the side for granted.

Welcoming the competition for places, he told The Star: "Being captain doesn't mean I'm an automatic starter.

"I still have to prove to the manager that I deserve to be playing. Nick coming back can only benefit the team.

"There is extra competition for places now but I'm up for the challenge as I'm sure Nick is."

Cresswell, Geoghaghon and Fenton are likely to be vying for two available centre-back slots against Burton, who are two points and one place below the Millers.

"I'm glad that I don't have to select the team," conceded Cresswell. "I'm just going to try to make sure that I am ready for Saturday and that I keep performing to the best of the my ability."

Meanwhile, Burton manager Paul Peschisolido says he expects ex-Barnsley defender Darren Moore to be fit for the trip on Saturday.
