Injured Barker forced to quit
ROTHERHAM United striker Richie Barker has been forced to quit the game due to a knee injury.
The devastating news for the one-time Sheffield Wednesday player follows surgery earlier this year.
Barker, who is 34 tomorrow, joined the Millers for a second time at the beginning of October and scored on his first appearance when going on as a substitute in a 4-1 win over Grimsby.
However, he was to make only five starts although he appeared several times as a substitute, the last of them on January 3 in the home draw with Dagenham and Redbridge.
Barker, from Aston and a former England Youth international, began his career with Wednesday but made only a couple of appearances. He had a loan at Doncaster before his career took off at Brighton after a spell with Northern Ireland club Linfield.
Rotherham signed him for 60,000 from Macclesfield in January 2001 to help their promotion push into The Championship that year and his 155 appearances in his first spell with the Millers were evenly split between starts and substitute appearances.
He subsequently played for Mansfield and Hartlepool where he enjoyed prolific scoring spells and was top scorer at both clubs before his return to Rotherham seven months ago.
