Goal star Reid told by Millers to earn his move

ROTHERHAM United's want-away striker, Reuben Reid, is being warned that he must continue to work hard for the Millers if he wants prove to everyone that he is worth a move.

Last season's 19-goal top scorer has had his transfer request granted reluctantly by the board and the club are now open to offers.

Manager Mark Robins said: "We'll wait and see if anybody matches our valuation and if they do then we'll take it from there.

"Until then, he's our player and he'll work towards getting himself in the team and getting himself fit.

"If he wants to prove to people that he's worth his salt then he has to do the right thing by his employers, which is us."

With the players back in training, Robins added: "Now it's time for the hard work. We'll assess the players on a daily basis and get them as fit as we can for the season ahead."

Reid has another year left on his contract but turned down an extension and requested a move.

The Millers had already rejected a 100,000 bid from MK Dons - with the club feeling that he is worth much more than that.

There must be a big doubt about whether Dons will come back in for him - their manager, Roberto Di Matteo, has now left for West Brom.

There have been reports of a possible return to Dons by former boss Paul Ince, a year after he left for Blackburn where he was later axed.

Reid, aged 20, was previously with Brentford and was virtually unknown when he joined the Millers on trial last summer.

He came through Plymouth's youth system and had loan spells at Wycombe, Torquay, Rochdale and Kidderminster.

At his previous clubs he played only a few senior games, but he was given a two-year Millers deal after only two appearances in friendlies. Then his career took off with 18 league goals and one in the Carling Cup, against Sheffield Wednesday.

During the season he attracted interest from League One and Championship clubs.
