Coughlan loving it with his old boss

it was no surprise when former Owls favourite Graham Coughlan made it a ‘hat-trick’ with Paul Sturrock when he linked up with Southend United, scheduled opponents for Rotherham United tomorrow night.

The ex-Wednesday and one-time Millers defender had twice previously linked up with Sturrock (with great success at Plymouth and then the Owls) and got the call when Sturrock was asked to start turning round Southend’s ailing fortunes in the summer of 2010.

Coughlan is now Sturrock’s right hand man with the title of player/assistant manager although, now 37, the playing side is winding down having made just five appearances this season.

“I’m loving it working alongside the gaffer and I’ve learned plenty and am continuing to do so,” said Coughlan who still lives in Sheffield.

A popular skipper at Wednesday (he was Player of the Year in 2005/06) he is fondly remembered too by Millers followers although he played just one season, 2007/08, missing only one game.

He really began to cut his coaching teeth when Sturrock initially put him in charge of the reserves at Southend. He became Sturrock’s right hand man last year and it seems likely he could one day follow his mentor into management.

Southend, 4-0 victors at Don Valley, are currently third.

Coughlan was a brilliant captain & earned the respect of the fans wherever he has played because he led by example, was honest & hard working, while encouraging & organising the players around him. He & Sturrock have always been a good combination and represent a lot of what is good in football, unlike some of these snidey managers that are popping up all over the place. I hope that Coughlan has a long and successful career as a coach & a manager.
