Rotherham United’s promotion-winning captain Johnny Mullins has joined Oxford United.
The 27-year-old defender, who scored the crucial first goal in the final game of the season against Aldershot when promotion was clinched, joins Chris Wilder’s side on a three-year deal.
He went on loan to Oxford last October but then was recalled the following month and was made skipper, eventually finishing the season at right back. Signed three years ago from Stockport, he made 110 appearances and became a fans’ favourite.
The Millers will go into tonight’s home friendly against Middlesbrough (7.30) without last season’s top scorer Daniel Nardiello. He injured a hamstring in Saturday’s game with Huddersfield and although it initially looked a concern, the club say that it is not as bad as first feared although it is likely to put a doubt against his participation in the opening League One game at Crewe on August 3.
In his absence, they could start tonight with Danny Hylton who scored against Boro for Aldershot in the FA Cup last season.
Midfielder Lee Frecklington, who injured a hip in training, was left out on Saturday as a precaution.
