ROTHERHAM United manager Steve Evans says he’s the one stopping players from joining the club despite chairman Tony Stewart driving him to make signings.

“I’m the stubborn little bugger who’s saying ‘no’ because he’s not good enough or not the right character,” said Evans.

“I’m not going to bring players in if they can’t get into the team. That’s the benchmark - you have to be able to get in the team.”

Evans still aims to recruit in January and amidst his praise for one of the best performances of the season at promotion rivals Fleetwood on Tuesday, he conceded they were “still a work in progress”.

He added: “If we are around the play-offs in January then I’ll be pleased.”

The Millers have doubts over Kari Arnason and Jamie Devitt for Saturday’s trip to Dagenham.

Arnason landed on his shoulder and Devitt tweaked a hamstring and both missed the second half.

Alec Denton scored twice as the reserves beat Fleetwood 6-2 in the Reserves League Cup at Parkgate. Others were from Kieran Agard, Nicky Walker, Luke Beedham and Mitchell Rose. Laurie Wilson had a penalty saved.
