ROTHERHAM UNITED: Signed to play not sit - Steve Evans

THE next signing for Rotherham United won’t be brought in to sit on the subs’ bench, manager Steve Evans insists.

Deprived of a wide player for up to three months after Lionel Ainsworth’s surgery for a dislocated shoulder this week, Evans will be looking to bring someone in who can play out wide.

He doesn’t necessarily need to make a recruit before Saturday’s FA Cup-tie at home to Stevenage but will want to add to his attacking options ahead of the return to league action at Fleetwood next Tuesday.

“I won’t sign anyone who I don’t think will go in and play,” said Evans. “There’s no point having them sitting on their backside.

“What’s more, anyone who comes in has to produce and if their performances don’t dictate they’ll play then they are on the bench.”

Gareth Evans got the last-minute nod after Ainsworth’s late withdrawal on Saturday.

The club expect confirmation tomorrow over whether or not Lee Frecklington will be available for Saturday’s game.
