Rotherham United Wembley hero Alex Revell is relishing the start of the season, believing boss Steve Evans has built a squad of genuine Championship quality.

The striker scored twice in the League One Play-off Final in May to help fire the Millers into the second tier for the first time in nine years.

“We’re feeling good about the start of the league season,” the 31-year-old fans’ faviourite said.

“We had a good squad last year and obviously it’s been improved with the lads Steve Evans has brought in.

“I think we can make that jump from league One to the Championship.

“With the players that have been added, and the confidence we’ve got from two successive promotions, we can go into the Championship and enjoy it.”

Revell says the players have worked hard in pre-season and he’s glad August 9 opening day at Derby County is upon them after a tough pre-season.

“You get fed up of all the running,” he grinned. “But that side of it, we’ve done done it, and now we’re all looking forward to the Championship.

Revell has been in fine pre-season form.

He was a handful for fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest a fortnight ago and won virtually everything in the air while he was on the pitch during the 3-1 defeat against Premier League newe boys Leicester City on Tuesday at New York Stadium

And he revealed that Forers gave Rotherham a vote of confidence after their clash which ended in a 1-0 win for the Millers. He said: “When you’re coming off the pitch and a couple of their players are saying how well we played and if we play like that we’ll do all right next year, it’s nice to hear.”

Meanwhile, St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright yesterday confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday have entered the race for Millers target Stevie May.

Huddersfield Towns have denied any interest and by last night Rotherham and the Owls were the only two clubs to have made bids.

May is due to play for St Johnstone tonight in a Europa League match.
