Rotherham United have decided against offering a deal to controversial striker Nile Ranger.

Ranger, who has convictions for criminal damage and assault and walked out on previous club Blackpool, had been training with the Millers.

Boss Neil Warnock decided it was the wrong time to sign the 24-year-old former Newcastle United frontman, with his squad fighting for Championship survival, although he hasn’t ruled out working with him again.

“We’re not going to take him on,” Warnock confirmed. “It’s nothing to do with his reputation. What I’ve said to him is, we haven’t really got time. He’s a couple of weeks from Championship-level fitness.

“If I’m at the club - or wherever I am - in the summer, he’s quite welcome to come and do a pre-season with me and see what happens from there.”

Ranger has impressed Warnock whose side are in action at play-off-chasing Ipswich Town tomorrow before heading into the two-week international break.

“His attitude has been good with me,” the manager said. “He shouldn’t be where he is at the moment with his ability. But he’s done well here.

“One or two clubs lower down than the Championship have asked about him so whether he goes to one of those to the end of the season I don’t know.”

Warnock has to decide if Richard Wood is fit to face the Tractor Boys after the centre-half missed last Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Derby County with a hamstring problem.

“Richard is training again. Whether we risk him, with two weeks off after this game, I don’t know,” he said.

Defender Lloyd Doyley, who hasn’t played since his debut at Burnley last month, has trained all week and is in contention with Danny Collins to deputise if Wood doesn’t make it.

Left winger Jerome Thomas is definitely out after limping off against the Rams.
