Boss Steve Evans believes Rotherham United new boy Joe Newell outshone one of the top players in the Championship on Saturday.

The 22-year-old played in midfield at Nottingham Forest where he came up against Henri Lansbury who is thought to be on the verge of a big-money move to Burnley.

“Newell was the best player on the park,” Evans said,

“I’m looking at the boy, Lansbury, who’s a wonderful, wonderful talent worth, what, £4 or £5 million.

“I think if they come and look neutrally today Newell is the best player in midfield by some distance.”

Newell, after filling in at left-back while Joe Mattock was injured, will now be given a run in his favoured midfield role.

Evans says the left-footed ace, signed earlier this month for an undisclosed fee from Peterborough, is a welcome presence at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“A couple of Championship clubs tried to gazump us. But that young man had given us word, shook on it and gone home to sleep,” he said.

“He knew about that interest as he woke up in the morning but said ‘I’ve given Steve Evans my word’.

“That’s the kind of character we want at the Millers.

“He’s got wonderful vision. His passing is outstanding. He’s a wonderful talent. We’ll try to find two or three more like that!“

Evans says he will stick by new goalkeeper Kelle Roos who produced some good saves but could have handled a cross better in the build-up to Forest’s second goal in the Millers’ 2-1 defeat.

“He’s a top goalkeeper. His distribution was good, in the main, and he’s plucked out every corner that’s come in,” he said,

“He’ll play against Preston on Tuesday.

“We go away with a lot of plusses. I thought the performance was excellent.

“We’ll build on that. If we play like that, we’ll get a lot more points than we did last year.”
