Rotherham United No 2 Paul Raynor welcomed new boy John Swift to the club by describing him as a “great talent”.
The 19-year-old joined the club on a season-long loan from Chelsea only on Friday and showed signs of his potential during a second-half cameo in the 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers.
Raynor said on Saturday: “He’s a work in progress.
“Today is literally the first time he’s met us all. He met the guys getting on the coach today, having travelled up last night.
“He’s with us now and he’ll get better and better the more time he spends with us.
“We’ll get used to him, he’ll certainly get used to us and what we want from him.
“He’s a great talent and he’ll play a big part this season.”
Swift, who scored 18 goals in Chelsea’s junior set-up last season, is an attacking midfielder with great technique and a turn of pace.
Millers boss Steve Evans landed Swift after weeks of negotations with Stamford Bridge officials who finally guided the youngster in the direction of New York Stadium despite competition from elsewhere.
Evans said: “I have to pay tribute to Jose Mourinho and his team at Chelsea.
“Their conduct throughout our dealings with them has been absolutely exemplary.
“John has been training daily with their first-team squad which just goes to show the very high regard in which he is held there.
“It’s exciting to have a player of his talent and I am delighted we were able to get the deal done.
“He performances at times for the Chelsea under-20 side last season were stunning.”
Rotherham wrap up their intensive programme of pre-season matches tomorrow with the visit of Premier League Leicester City, before Championship opening day this Saturday when they play Derby County at the iPro Stadium.
