Rotherham United: Millers boss Paul Warne eyes Blade Matt Done, but Jordan Willis interest has cooled

The Millers manager wants to sign three strikers, a goalscoring midfielder and possibly two centre-halves before his relegated squad begin life in League One next season.

Done, who played a part in the Blades’ third-tier promotion campaign this year, fits the bill because he can operate in midfield or up front.

“The fact he can play in a few positions ... they are the sort of players I like to bring in,” said Warne who revealed Rotherham have made offers for two other players and are waiting to hear back from their clubs.

“I am well aware of him. I have seen him play a few times and he has played quite well. I can see why people would be linked with him.”

The pacy 28-year-old played 35 times in the 2016/17 campaign but has been placed on the transfer list.

Warne is on a scouting mission this weekend, checking out centre-forwards in matches in Dublin and London, and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of two frontmen joining the club in the next few days.

“We are pretty close,” he said. “I’d like to think we could have a couple of strikers in for next week. That would be the ideal.

“I am going to watch a couple of strikers this weekend. I like to watch my players live if I can. Obviously, it’s not always possible.

“I went to watch a player just recently and when I saw him I wasn’t 100 per cent convinced.

“Two different clubs are coming back to us on offers, so this time next week I could be cruising or I could still be competing for targets.”

The fact that the manager is chasing up to two centre-halves and has offered out-of-contract Richard Wood fresh terms puts question marks against the Millers futures of central defenders Kirk Broadfoot and Aimen Belaid.

Both still have a year left on their deals at New York Stadium but they are likely to be among the contracted players told by Warne that they don’t figure in his plans.

Warne, planning for his first season in permanent charge after taking the hot-seat last month following a spell in caretaker charge, says the Millers’ interest in Coventry City’s Jordan Willis, who can play at centre-half or full-back, isn’t as strong as it was in the January transfer window.

“We were linked to him heavily in January,” he said. “We put in a really comprehensive package for him.

“But I don’t know if it is the top of my list to spend a lot of money on a right-back. I need to strengthen at the top of the pitch. It will be more of a case of strengthening there and working my way back.

“If I could bring in Jordan Willis and afford to, I possibly would. I speak to Robbo (Sky Blues boss and a former Millers teammate of Warne’s, Mark Robins) a lot anyway. But he is a Coventry player and I expect him to start the season there.”
