Defender Joe Mattock has rejected the chance of a move elsewhere to commit his future to Rotherham United.

The left-back today signed a two-year deal to became the first of the trio of out-of-contract players offered fresh deals to extend his stay with the Millers.

Other sides were ready to take him, but the 27-year-old decided he wants to be part of manager Paul Warne’s new era in League One next season.

“There have been a couple of clubs interested, but I’m comfortable at Rotherham,” the 27-year-old said. “It’s a good club and I’ve enjoyed my years that I’ve been here. I’m not looking to move anywhere else.”

Mattock has been at New York Stadium since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 and being snapped up by then-boss Steve Evans.

He has made 71 Championship appearances for the Millers and was prepared to step down a division following the club’s relegation this season from the second tier because he wants to continue playing under Warne.

“He was massive,” Mattock said. “We’ve got such a good relationship. We speak on the phone and text each other regularly. But it’s not just that ... I believe in what he wants to do.”

Midfielder Richie Smallwood and centre-half Richard Wood have yet to say whether they will be accepting new terms and are being pressed for answers this week.

Mattock is glad his own uncertainty is over and is already looking forward to the 2017/18 campaign.

He added: “He’s (Warne) very keen to implement what he wants in pre-season. He’s got his objectives and he wants the players to buy into what he wants to do. I’m definitely keen to do that.

“I think if we all stick to that, we’ll do really well. I’m excited for the new season and what’s to come. I think it will be a good year for us.

“No player wants to be in the dark too much in the summer, floating between clubs and what-not. I’m very pleased to be re-signing at Rotherham.”
