Rotherham United: How the farewell five have done since leaving the Millers

That was Rotherham United’s business in the January transfer window.

Goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell, centre-half Semi Ajayi and left-back Ben Purrington have become Millers regulars, winger Alex Bray has been a squad player and centre-forward Carlton Morris has yet to make his mark, his loan arrival from Norwich City delayed by a hamstring injury.

But how have the five who departed South Yorkshire fared?

Izzy Brown

The young Chelsea attacker had been on loan at Rotherham and headed to fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town on the advice of his parent club.

Brown, aged 20, has had a huge impact at the John Smith’s Stadium, scoring four goals in eight appearances to boost the Terriers’ promotion push and winning a fans’ Player of the Month award.

Jake Forster-Caskey

Forster-Caskey’s loan move to the Millers from Brighton and Hove Albion never worked out and he headed to League One Charlton Athletic on a permanent deal to be reunited with Karl Robinson, the boss who worked with him during a loan spell at MK Dons last season.

The 22-year-old midfielder made his debut on January 28 in a 2-1 win at high-flying Bolton Wanderers, where he played against Rotherham loanee Tom Thorpe, and has started four matches since.

Dael Fry

The teenage centre-half came to Rotherham on loan with England youth credentials in August, but he struggled at times with the physicality of the second tier and headed back to Teesside and parent club Middlesbrough.

He was an unused substitute in Boro’s 0-0 Premier League draw at Watford on January 14 and came on in the ninth minute, to replace the injured George Friend, when Aitor Karanka’s team beat Accrington Stanley 1-0 in the FA Cup two weeks later.

Greg Halford

Utility man Halford, 32, joined Cardiff City - managed by last season’s Millers survival saviour, Neil Warnock - for an undisclosed fee.

He played for the Bluebirds for the first time in their January 8 2-1 FA Cup defeat at home to Fulham and has since made four starts and two substitute appearances.

He was an unused sub last weekend when City beat Rotherham 5-0.

Dominic Ball

The 21-year-old went out on loan to League One Peterborough United and was praised for his performance on his January 21 debut at centre-half in a 1-0 win at Swindon Town.

He has made five more starts, and scored in a 2-1 home triumph over Shrewsbury Town on Valentine’s Day, but was only on the bench for Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat at Easter Road against Southend United.
