After missing out so often this season, Rotherham United have picked up one of the Football League’s monthly awards.
Kieran Agard has been named as League One Player of the Month for April.
It’s reward for the speedy attacker after he scored five goals in April which included a ‘perfect’ hat-trick at Wolves - right foot, left foot and header - and the club’s fastest ever league goal (and second fastest in any competition) when he scored after 13 seconds at Gillingham.
His winner against Port Vale on Easter Monday took his goal tally to 25.
“It’s fantastic to get an honour like this but I have to thank my teammates because they have contributed so much to this,” said the 24-year-old.
“It’s always nice to win awards and to get rewarded for doing well but we all know what reward we all want at the end of the season and we will be striving hard to achieve it.”
James Tavernier was on the shortlist for the March award but missed out. Steve Evans has three times been on the shortlist for Manager of the Month but not been successful.
Agard beat off challenges from Dave Edwards of Wolves, Paul Gallagher of Preston and Jack Grealish of Notts County.
“He deserves to win it, he’s had an excellent season,” said manager Steve Evans who reiterated that he will have Agard for next season.
“We have an option on him but, as with the rest who we’ll talk to, we’ll get down to things when the Play-offs are over for us - hopefully on May 25th - and he’ll be in the mix, there’ll be no special treatment for anyone beforehand.
The Millers head for their final league game at Swindon Town tomorrow and have their worst home defeat of the season to avenge.
They lost 4-0 back on October 12 but then lost just one of their subsequent 16 home games in League One, on New Year’s Day to Coventry and that was down to missing a stoppage time penalty.
Rotherham’s tormentor that day, attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard, returned to his club Spurs this week.
