Defender Frazer Richardson has backed boss Steve Evans in his mission to establish Rotherham United as a midtable Championship team.

The Millers stayed up by five points in their first campaign in the second tier under Evans last season, despite a three-point Football League deduction.

And Richardson believes the experience of the survival season, allied with nine summer signings so far, will help the Rotherham boss achieve his target.

“After back-to-back promotions, there was always going to be a season of wanting to stay in the Championship,” the right-back said.

“We’ve done that, and that gives the the club a great platform to build on.

“I think the Gaffer’s aim of ‘midtable looking up’ is massively realistic.

“Midtable looking higher ... yeah, I think that’s a strong possibility.”

Richardson ended last season with a calf injury and delayed his holiday by a fortnight to receive treatment at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

He has featured in all three of the Millers’ pre-season friendlies, at Parkgate FC, Stocksbridge Park Steels and Alfreton Town.

His rival for the right-back berth, Lewis Buxton, signed after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, has been nursing an injury and has yet to make his Rotherham debut.

Looking forward to August 8 opening day, the 32-year-old added: “We need to try to get off to a good start and think positively.

“As a player, obviously, you always want to finish as high as possible.”

The Millers begin their league campaign at home newly-promoted MK Dons before a trip to Nottingham Forest.
