Rotherham United coach Paul Warne looked beyond tonight’s double-header and said the Millers’ Championship challenge was filling him with a mixture of excitement and anxiety.
The club are sending out two strong teams tonight for friendlies at Alfreton Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels (both 7.30pm) as they prepare for the big kick-off on August 9, at Derby County.
Warne, who was in the Millers teams who won back-t0-back promotions in 2000 and 2001, said of the impending season: “‘Excited’ is a good word to describe how I’m feeling, but there is also a little bit of apprehension that comes with being a professional and wanting to know that your all your preparation has worked out.
“We’ve strengthened through the summer, and there could still be a couple more additions.
“The boys have all worked hard and I think when August 9 comes round we should be good to go.”
Manager Steve Evans has picked two teams packed with potential first-teamers tonight and the benches wil be filled by development players.
“The two games coming quickly on the back of two at the weekend are highly beneficial for the first-team squad,” Evans said.
“Fitness within the group is excellent and it’s now all about match time and sharpness. It’s my intention to go to Doncaster on Saturday and then host Leicester City next Tuesday with only first-team players, but the squads will be rotated largely on 45 and 60 minutes.”
Millers v Alfreton: Collin, Rowe, Broadfoot, Arnason, Skarz, Rose, Frecklington Tidser, Hall, Revell, Derbyshire,
Millers v Stocksbridge: Loach, Brindley, Morgan, Wood, Sadler, Brandy, Newton, Green, Pringle, Bowery, Agard.
