Rotherham United manager says Tony Thompson and Nicky Walker fully deserve their first professional contracts.

Academy duo Thompson and Walker, both aged 18, have signed one-year deals with the club after completing their two-year scholarships.

“Tony and Nicky have made good progress and are fully deserving of the young professional contracts they have now signed,” Evans said.

“This is a very early stage in their careers and it is now up to them to make further progress from being a development squad player to earn a place in the first-team squad proper.

“I would expect both lads to have some involvement in our lesser profile pre-season matches.”

Midfielder Walker made his first-team debut last season coming on as a late substitute during the 4-2 home victory over Cheltenham Town. He also appeared off the bench in the FA Cup win at Notts County and the home win over Accrington. Goalkeeper Thompson hasn’t made a first-team appearance yet but has been in the matchday squad 25 times.
