Rotherham United: Evans praise as scholars graduate to pro contracts

Rotherham United manager says Tony Thompson and Nicky Walker fully deserve their first professional contracts.

Academy duo Thompson and Walker, both aged 18, have signed one-year deals with the club after completing their two-year scholarships.

“Tony and Nicky have made good progress and are fully deserving of the young professional contracts they have now signed,” Evans said.

“This is a very early stage in their careers and it is now up to them to make further progress from being a development squad player to earn a place in the first-team squad proper.

“I would expect both lads to have some involvement in our lesser profile pre-season matches.”

Midfielder Walker made his first-team debut last season coming on as a late substitute during the 4-2 home victory over Cheltenham Town. He also appeared off the bench in the FA Cup win at Notts County and the home win over Accrington. Goalkeeper Thompson hasn’t made a first-team appearance yet but has been in the matchday squad 25 times.
