Manager Steve Evans has praised the Rotherham United pairing who tamed a Millers legend at the weekend.

Craig Morgan and Kari Arnason played in the heart of the Rotherham defence at Cardiff City who had won their last five matches at home.

And so good were they together that former Millers hitman Adam Le Fondre - 54 goals in 90 league starts for the club between 2009 and 2011 - was hauled off goalless for the Bluebirds in the second half.

“I’m delighted for Craig and Arni who played like they can play,” Evans said.

Evans had split up the partnership which had served him so well earlier in the season after a dodgy showing in a home defeat to Birmingham City.

But, back in tandem, not only did they snuff out Le Fondre in the 0-0 draw they dominated former Premier League striker Kenwyne Jones to the extent he was substituted as well.

“If it comes down to wage packets, they’re not on the same page (as Le Fondre and Jones),” Evans added.

“But it doesn’t come down to wage packets, it comes down to desire, passion, commitment.

“I’ve been and watched games here when we’ve not been involved since Russell Slade’s been at charge.

“They get at teams. They pass it and they’ve got some really powerful players for the Championship. But they were second best to us all over.”

Young attacker Tom Lawrence has made such an impression in his first two matches that Evans is already open to the idea of extending the Leicester City 20-year-old’s loan spell beyond January.

Evans said: “That lies with a decision from a better manager than me in Nigel Pearson. But Nigel’s been very supportive . Tom wanted to come and play football. If he still wants to play football in January, that decision will lie with Mr Pearson. And you know one thing about Nigel, he’ll support me and lend me him again if he can.”

The Millers are at home to Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup on the weekend starting January 3.
