He may be a boy in blue now, but Alex Revell will never forget his time in the red of Rotherham United.
The striker described his three-plus years with the Millers, a spell which brought back-t0-back promotions and a Wembley wonder goal, as the best of his career.
“We had so much success in such a short period,” he said as he joined Cardiff City. “I enjoyed every minute of it. It was a great few years.”
The 31-year-old Millers legend signed a two-and-a-half deal with the Bluebirds on the day they announced they would be returning to the traditional blue strip which had been ditched by owner Vincent Tan.
And his parting shot to Millers fans is that he will never forget the kindness shown to him and his family by the people of Rotherham.
“Their support has been incredible,” he said. “So many people who never get the headlines have done so much to help us.
“It was difficult at first because I was in the shadow of Alfie (prolific scorer Adam Le Fondre) who had just left. But I’ve played the best football of my life with Rotherham and I think people recognise that. I’ve given it everything and shown I can play in the Championship.”
Revell, who scored 34 goals in 171 Millers games - including that unforgettable long-range effort at Wembley in the League One Play-off Final last May - said he had agonised over whether to leave. “It wasn’t a decision taken lightly,” he revealed. “But I just felt it was probably the right time to go.
“Most of the fans have been amazing with me, but there were a few who complained. I’m never going to be a striker who scores a lot of goals but I offer other things, and the manager must have believed in me because he kept picking me.”
He said the Welsh giants offered him a long-term deal and that was a major factor at this stage of his career.
“They’re a huge club, a Premier League side last year, and I can’t wait to play for them,” he added.
“I had to prove myself at Rotherham and now I’ve got to do the same at Cardiff. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
