Conor Newton has agreed to sign for Rotherham United for two years.

The 22 year-old Newcastle United midfielder will join the Play Off finalists, subject to a medical and Football League ratification.

Newton, who has spent the past 18 months on loan with St Mirren in Scotland, becomes the first signing ahead of the 2014/15 season.

The 5ft 11ins Geordie played 37 times in the league for the Saints last year, and scored in the final outing of the campaign against relegated Hearts, 12 months after getting the winning goal against them in the Scottish Cup final.

There had been speculation of interest from Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But the Millers, who face Leyton Orient at Wembley on Sunday, got their man, late last night.

Manager Steve Evans has lamented the fact that Newton cannot play at Wembley.

“I wish he could - but he will be brilliant for us” he said.
