THERE were a few suntans at the Don Valley last night. Certainly not acquired there, of course.

The training trip to Portugal provided the players’ top-up but it was red faces all round inside the first 20 minutes as the Millers found themselves two down.

If Andy Scott wanted to see how they might perform after a bad start, then he was going to get an idea. He began with Ben Pringle in centre midfield and Lewis Grabban on the right. Up front again was the little and little combo of Adam Le Fondre and Chris Holroyd,

Alan Knill included former Millers loanee Gavin Gunning at left back and winger Kieran Djilali, a Chesterfield loanee last season.

It was Holroyd who had an early half chance but he couldn’t connect properly.

The Iron’s Jimmy Ryan, the skilful little midfielder signed from Accrington, used his cracking right foot to strike a fine 25 yarder high beyond Logan’s left hand.

Nine minutes later, another ex-Accrington man, Bobby Grant was brought down in the area by Ryan Cresswell. Grant just squeezed the penalty under Logan.

Minutes later one-time Blades striker Jordan Robertson was denied No 3 by Conrad Logan’s outstretched foot.

Rotherham’s first real threat was a set-piece. Danny Schofield’s corner saw Cresswell’s header hooked away from inside the six yard area.

Djilali curled an effort narrowly wide and it was proving hard work for the Millers to make a real impression.

Gunning’s interception stopped Le Fondre breaking through before the striker produced a classy effort of control and instant shot but over the top.

Half-time change saw Holroyd off and Jason Taylor into midfield. Pringle went left and Danny Schofield centrally. Grabban went up front with Le Fondre.

Rotherham had more of a foothold and Cresswell’s header from a corner by Schofield was brilliantly kept out by Lillis.

At least the Millers stretched Scunny and only Nelson’s excellent interception checked a Le Fondre-Schofield link with the newcomer set to go clear. Closest they came was Grabban striking a post from 22 yards near the end.

ROTHERHAM: Logan; Tonge, Brown, Cresswell, Newey; Grabban, Harrison, Pringle, Schofield (Evans 79); Le Fondre, Holroyd (Taylor ht). Subs: Warrington, Foster, Marshall.
