TOP-SCORER Daniel Nardiello registered against his old club as Rotherham United cruised to a comprehensive victory over Exeter City, writes Dom Howson.
Millers raced into a 3-0 lead after 30 minutes courtesy of goals from Ben Pringle, Nardiello, his 19th of the season, and Michael O’Connor.
Craig Morgan bagged his first goal in Rotherham colours six minutes after the break before Danny Coles pulled one back.
Steve Evans, the Rotherham United boss, made three changes to his starting line-up, handing starts to Dale Tonge, Nardiello and David Noble. Mark Bradley, Lionel Ainsworth and the suspended Johnny Mullins made way.
Rotherham made a dream start, breaking the deadlock after one minute through Pringle. The midfield play-maker surged forward at pace before powering an effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.
Exeter nearly levelled things up just before the quarter of the hour mark but Scott Shearer produced a fine save to tip Craig Woodman’s free-kick over the crossbar. Lawson D’Ath and Mark Molesley flashed efforts wide as they continued to press for an equaliser.
But the Grecians were made to pay for their profligacy in the 28th minute as Nardiello finished off a lovely move.
It got even better two minutes later when O’Connor’s drive deflected in.
Artur Krysiak kept out Nardiello’s fierce long range shot as Rotherham continued to pile on the pressure.
Morgan put the result beyond any doubt in the 51st minute when he drilled an unstoppable volley past Krysiak from 10 yards.
Exeter substitute John O’Flynn came agonisingly close to reducing the deficit but his header drifted over.
To compound the visitors misery, D’ath failed to hit the target from long range mid-way through the half but deservedly grabbed a consolation through Coles, who scrambled the ball home from a corner.
The result leaves Rotherham three points shy of the automatic promotion placings with four League Two matches left.
