Rotherham are given a lesson in finishing

ROTHERHAM United suffered their first home defeat and it was a shattering one. They were outclassed and could have no complaints.

Peter Gilbert gave Southend a 10th minute lead and apart from a brief first half spell Rotherham were second best.

In Cresswell’s absence the captain’s armband was worn for the first time by Revell.

The Millers were behind after 10 minutes.

Left back Gilbert took a short corner from the right. His centre was cleared back across the face of the area into the path of Gilbert and he struck a low shot inside Logan’s near post.

Rotherham picked up their game near the stroke of half-time. Revell, receiving from Evans, took control and shot on the turn a yard wide.

Then after Revell earned a corner, Brown saw his header from the resultant set-piece cleared off the line.

However, just two minutes into the second half, Southend extended their lead.

Leonard hurled a massive long throw deep into the goalmouth. Raynes won the header but as the ball dropped away towards the far side, Timlin swooped to hit a left foot volley just inside the far post.

The third goal did arrive on the hour and the warning about set-pieces proved to be right.

It was another long throw by Leonard on the right. The ball was headed away under pressure and it was that man Timlin who moved forward with no one picking him up and he rattled a cracking left foot volley from 20 yards high past Logan.

Rotherham were staring at their first home defeat and it was confirmed when Southend bagged their fourth three minutes later.

Leonard went forward with Rotherham in disarray and from his low centre veteran goal poacher Harris swept home one of the easier goals of his many.
