ROTHERHAM United lost to a 22nd minute goal by former Miller Deon Burton at League Two leaders Gillingham in a vital promotion match.
Millers boss Steve Evans picked an attacking formation with wingers Lionel Ainsworth and Daniel Kearns both selected. Lee Frecklington was ill, but was named on the bench.
Gillingham had been enjoying a greater share of possession in the opening stages and their pressure was rewarded when Burton headed home from six yards after a cross from Danny Kedwell.
The Gills nearly doubled their lead just before the break but Joe Martin fired just over.
Evans made two changes at half time with Ainsworth and David Noble coming off and Ben Pringle and Michael O’Connor coming on.
And just after the hour Daniel Nardiello made way for Kayode Odejayi as Rotherham tried to force and equaliser.
Eight minutes from time the Millers nearly got on level terms. O’Connor latched onto a clearance but Nelson tipped his volley over.
A late penalty appeal when Kearns tumbled over in the box went unanswered and in the final seconds Alex Revell headed over from an O’Connor cross.
