Chesterfield boss Dean Saunders reflected on the weekend victory at Fleetwood Town that lifted his side back into the top ten in League One.

Chesterfield boss Dean Saunders reflected on the weekend victory at Fleetwood Town that lifted his side back into the top ten in League One.

“It was a good win,” said the manager. “We had to put out a makeshift defence with lots of changes but we kept a clean sheet, so I’m really pleased.

“Fleetwood put a block down the middle of the pitch against us so we had go round the sides of them.

“I tried to pull Rai Simons out to the right so we could actually get the ball out to the sides and start getting some crosses in.

“We managed to do that in the end but it took us too long to work it out after going through it in training.”

Chesterfield’s winner came after 30 minutes, a tap-in from in-form striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, his sixth goal of the season and fourth in four games. He struck after the ball had ricocheted off the bar from a defender’s header.

Saunders added: “It’s not luck, it’s what he does. It’s about knowing and anticipating where to go by reading the situation. If we get enough balls in the box, he’ll score.”

The Spireites have to wait until Monday evening for their next fixture, a televised FA Cup tie at FC United of Manchester which will earn the club around £68,000.

United lost 3-1 at Boston United on Saturday, watched by Chesterfield scouting supremo Paul Mitchell.
