Yesterday, across England, was Non League Day, a chance to put the country’s smaller clubs in the spotlight and let them show off what they have to offer.
We went along to Stocksbridge Park Steels’ Bracken Moor ground on the outskirts of Sheffield, where the home side hosted Carlton Town. As one of many initiatives Non League clubs had put on, the Steels, having originally announced they would give half the gate receipts to Weston Park Hospital, offered all of it to the charity.
There were a few extra fans inside the ground - a smattering of Blades and a scattering of Owls, but moreover, this was the hardcore support who come most weeks to watch Stocksbridge Park, or help out in any way they can...behind the bar, selling ballots, making bacon butties and warming pies. And this is mirrored across South Yorkshire and up and down the country every week.
