Match Report by Chris Eyre
The final of the Tesco U13 Challenge Cup between Scawthorpe Scorpions from the Doncaster Free Press Doncaster & District Junior Sunday League and Staveley based Handley Wood who play in the Rosehill Press Sheffield & District Junior Sunday League took place at Grange Park Football Ground, Home of Millmoor Juniors yesterday (3rd April)
The game was an exciting end to end affair with both sets of players making good use of the bouncing ball and giving it their all. In fact, both teams managers were kept busy all morning as neither team gave an inch.
Both teams liked going forward, but Handley Wood were making the most of playing down the gentle slope in the first half and Sam Taylor in the Scawthorpe Scorpions goal came to his teams rescue with several fine saves.
However he was eventually beaten in the 26th minute when Brandon Groves’s long free kick from the half way line took a nasty bounce and sailed over the head of the advancing Taylor into the net to give Handley Wood a deserved lead.
Scawthorpe Scorpions counter attacked after this and Luke Morgan’s shot from close range just went over the bar, leaving the half time score 1-0 in favour of Handley Wood.
The second half continued at the same pace as the first half and Scawthorpe’s Rory Millar saw his snap shot from the edge of the box hit the bar with the keeper stranded, but it then bounced safely clear. Shortly afterwards Jordan Buckle’s clever cross into the Handley Wood penalty area was scrambled clear at the third attempt.
However Handley Wood increased their lead in the 55th minute when a long free kick by Groves was only parried half clear by Taylor in the Scawthorpe goal as he came under pressure from the challenging attackers; the ball fell nicely for Aidan McTighe to hit into the empty net from the edge of the area to make it 2-0.
Scawthorpe Scorpions continued to attack to try and get themselves back into the cup tie and score and in the 61st minute John Mombili was put through with only the advancing Handley keeper Thomas Hardwick to beat. However, Hardwick bravely dived at Mombili’s feet to advert the danger, unfortunately getting injured and having to be replaced in goal. The stand in keeper Gianluca Santoro was quickly in action having to deal with two testing corners from Rory Millar.
Both teams kept going to the end, and eventually Referee Colin Bailey blew for time to end a game that had been fully enjoyed by spectators from both teams, with Handley Wood JFC 2-0 winners and the Tesco U13 Challenge Cup Final champions for the second time in three seasons.
James Hope-Gill, Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Chief Executive presented Handley Wood with the Tesco U13 Challenge Cup and medals.
