SHEFFIELD FC’s promotion hopes ended in tatters at the rain soaked New Manor Ground following a heavy 7-0 defeat against Ilkeston FC in the Evo-Stik Division One South play-off semi-final.
Club started well enough having a couple of early efforts that were deflected wide. But with Conor Higginson sent off seven minutes before the break for raising his arms with Sheffield already 2-0 down at the time, Mark Shaw’s men caved in after the break. Having already rattled the crossbar, Ilkeston opened the scoring on 27 minutes through leading scorer Gary Ricketts nodding in his 22nd of the season.
Jack Watts doubled the advantage on 34 minutes heading home a cross from 12-yards.
Watts turned provider for the third eight minutes after the interval crossing for Daryll Thomas to guide a shot beyond Josh Mimms in the Sheffield goal.
Matt Varley turned a Thomas cross into his own net to put Ilkeston 4-0 up on the hour. Thomas grabbed his second and the home side’s fifth with a good finish from a through ball with Francis Green tapping in the sixth before Matt Richards completed the rout eight minutes from time.
Worksop Town came from a goal down to beat County Senior League Penistone Church 3-2 at the Memorial Ground in the semi-final of the Sheffield Senior Cup.
The Tigers now face Frickley Athletic, managed by their former boss Peter Rinkcavage, in the final at Hillsborough on Tuesday, May 8
