Sheffield City Council have postponed all fixtures set to take place on their football pitches this coming weekend due to the heavy rains of the last few days.

All matches planned for January 9 and 10 have been cancelled on pitches operated by the Parks and Countryside Service, including those on parks, recreation grounds and playing fields.

A statement from the council read: “The weather conditions experienced over the past few weeks have resulted in most football pitches being waterlogged, it is therefore necessary to cancel all fixtures.

“We have also taken into account the weather forecast, which indicates no improvement for later in the week. The weather conditions have also prevented marking out taking place.

“As you will appreciate, playing a fixture on an unsuitable pitch surface will cause damage which will not be possible to rectify during the season and, in certain cases, may result in the pitch being unsuitable for any further matches.”

The Sheffield and Hallamshire FA has warned teams could face suspension if it is discovered they have played a match.
