Maltby Main boss Nicky Norbury has boosted his squad by landing former Stocksbridge Park Steels assistant manager and defender Brett Bowden-Lovell.

The experienced centre-half was manager Darren Schofield’s right hand man at Stocksbridge last season. However, after Schofield’s dismissal following relegation from the Evo-Stik Premier Division Bowden-Lovell opted for Muglet Lane, turning down a number of offers from Evo-Stik clubs.

Maltby’s Director of Football Wilf Race has left the club after deciding to take a break from football. The club wish to place on record their thanks for all his efforts over the past season and hope to see him back at Muglet Lane in the not too distant future.

The pre-season friendlies got underway this week as Sheffield FC’s first warm up game ended in a 3-1 defeat at Retford United.

The Badgers edged in fron when Bobby Johnson rounded Club’s new goalkeeper David Reay, signed from neighbours Parkgate. Sheffield quickly equalised as Brad Bowland’s neat pass set up Ashley Longst to mark his return to the club with a goal.

The hosts regained the lead when Reay spilled Johnson’s firm drive allowing Kyle Hadley a simple tap-in before Retford wrapped it up the as Johnson grabbed his second from a penalty.

Parkgate came from a goal by Teversal’s Lee Naughton to win 2-1. George Morley levelled and Matt Young bagged the winner.

A Bradley Billam strike gave Rossington Main a 1-0 home win over Garforth Town, while goals from Max Leonard and Niall Simpson saw AFC Emley beat Shelley FC 2-0.

Maltby Main followed up their opening 5-2 friendly win at Muglet Lane against Shelley with a 2-2 draw at Selby Town thanks to a Nathan Lovell heaader and Bowden–Lovell’s first for the club.

Stocksbridge Park Steels pre-season game against Rotherham United has been brought forward a day to Tuesday, July 29 (7.30pm).

Friendlies include - tomorrow: Armthorpe W v Ossett Alb (2pm), Athersley Rec v Newton Aycliffe (3), Rossington M v Bridlington Town, Swallownest MW v Hallam.

Monday: Hallam v Chesterfield (7.30pm).

Tuesday: Brigg T v Worksop Tn (7.30), Dronfield Town v Shaw Lane (7.30), Handsworth Parra v Real United, Hemsworth MW v Frickley, Parkgate v Goole AFC, (7.15), Rossington M v Retford U, Sheffield FC v Chesterfield (7.30pm).

Wednesday: Penistone Church v Maltby Main (7.30pm), Matlock Town v Sheff Wed, Sheffield FC v Sheff Utd (7.30pm).
