THERE will be a new name on the Sheffield Senior Cup this year after holders Stocksbridge Park Steels went out 2-0 at Frickley Athletic.
The home side were ahead on five minutes, Kelvin Bleau knocking in a corner for Ben Turner to nod home. Steels’ best chance of the first half came 10 minutes before the break when a free-kick saw Brett Renshaw get in a header that sailed just over the crossbar.
Four minutes into the second half and Stocksbridge had it all to do as Frickley doubled their advantage. A long free-kick saw Ollie Ryan outpace Richard Haigh to steer a shot wide of Ben Scott in the Steels goal.
Steels had a chance to get back in it when they were awarded a penalty but Scott Hogan, who had been brought down, saw Steve Dickinson push his spot kick away.
Sheffield came from 1-0 down to beat Handsworth 3-1 after extra-time with subs Dan Williams the hero with a hat-trick.
The visitors were in front after just four minutes as Sam Smith kept up his remarkable scoring record with downward header for his 13th goal in the last 10 outings. Sheffield had a great chance to level when Jack Barnett curled a free-kick over the wall only for Andy Gascoigne to plant his header over the crossbar. Handsworth looked to have seen the job through but in the final minute Matt Varley launched a long throw into the box for Williams to send the tie into extra-time.
Williams nudged Club ahead for the first time on 115 minutes, heading home from a deep cross before putting the result beyond doubt in the final minute with a low shot.
In the NCEL, Hallam went down 2-0 at Askern Villa. Glen Rafferty headed the home side into the lead with Jay Rollins rifling home the second from 16 yards just after the interval. Armthorpe Welfare lost 4-1 at Pickering.
