STRIKE partners Gary Madine and new arrival Chris Maguire showed early signs that they’re capable of building a fruitful partnership by bagging three goals in the first half at Steels.

Other new boy Kieran Lee lined up in the right-back role, while Portuguese midfielder Diogo Amado played as an anchorman behind Chris Lines.

It was, however, a face familiar to the Wednesday fans in attendance, who had the first chance on goal after five minutes. Reda Johnson broke from left-back and his cross was prodded just wide by Madine.

Stocksbridge’s first effort was from distance when Scott Hogan curled a free-kick wide from 30 yards. Wednesday took the lead through Maguire on 18 minutes. Mike Jones laid the ball to him and Maguire fired it right-footed into Collinge’s far corner. Madine then made it two on 25 minutes. Daniel Jones rose to head Mike Jones’ cross back across goal for Madine to tap in. Amado threatened a debut goal before Maguire got his second in the 38th minute. Amado played the ball to Maguire who again found the bottom corner.

Ryan Lowe replaced Maguire for the second half while Stocksbridge made a raft of changes.

Both sides had made a slow start to the second period but Mark Reynolds, now playing left-back after Reda Johnson had been replaced, burst down the flank and his dangerous cross had to be diverted over by Brett Lovell.

Dave Jones introduced a batch of development players on the hour mark with all Wednesday’s first-team players who started being replaced apart from Reynolds, who Jones hasn’t seen play yet.

The youthful new Wednesday outfit looked lively and they created a chance for Lowe on 72 minutes.

The ball ran to the forward 25 yards out and he gave the keeper the eyes before cracking his shot against the left hand post.

Lowe then struck the post again before slipping Patrick Antelmi in for a late fourth.
