FA Trophy trail ends for Sheffield FC and Stocksbridge

Sheffield FC and Stocksbridge Park Steels both crashed out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle.

Club were beaten 3-0 at home by Frickley Athletic, while Steels were ousted 4-1 at home to Evo-Stik North side Atherton Collieries.

It was not the result new Sheffield boss Mark Shaw, pictured, had been hoping for coming just 24 hours after being handed the job on a permanent basis.

There was an early chance for Sheffield but Seb Malkowski blocked Derry Robson’s shot.

Jacob Hazel gave Frickley a 15th-minute lead with a clinical finish.

Sheffield responded with James Gregory having a shot blocked then Joel Purkiss twice going close while Jamie Hadfield sent a looping header over.

But Hazel maxde it 2-0, curling a fine effort inside the left post.

Frickley grabbed a third on 62 minutes when Hazel completed his hat-trick with a powerful shot from 25 yards.

Stocksbridge have reached the FA Trophy first round proper on both the past two seasons but Atherton dumped them out.

Kristian Holt headed Atherton ahead but Steels responded with Rory Coleman putting a free-kick just over.

But eight minutes from the interval Steels conceded a second. Liam McFadyen touching the ball past his own keeper David Reay as the defender tried to block a shot.

McFadyen almost made up for his own-goal firing narrowly wide but it was all over on 85 minutes as Atherton made it 3-0 through Ian Howard.

Ben Hardcastle then made it 4-0 on 90 but Stocksbridge id get on the scoresheet in time added through the returning Luke Mangham

Shaw Lane were knocked off the top of the Premier Division table on goal-difference following a 1-0 defeat at Barwell. But Buxton came from a goal down to beat Marine 2-1 at the Silverlands with goals from Luke Hinsley and Liam Hardy.

Matlock Town were well beaten 4-1 at struggling Stalybridge Celtic where Adam Etches grabbed a last minute consolation effort for the Gladiators
