STEVEN Gerrard says England must not underestimate Italy after Wayne Rooney’s second half winner against Ukraine set up a last eight clash with the Azzuri.
Group rivals France lost 2-0 against Sweden to leave England top of Group D and facing Italy on Sunday in Kiev - France will now play Spain on Saturday.
Gerrard said England must not get too pleased with avoiding World Cup and reigning European champions Spain: “Italy are next, they’ve got match-winners and we have to give them respect. And if we do well in the next game we might play Spain again in the competition.”
“Spain are fantastic but so are Italy. They’re very good defensively.”
Gerrard said England have responded to comments that they may not be good enough to get out of their group: “We’ve been criticised in the past maybe for not turning up, under-performing and we can take that, we’re man enough. But you saw a reaction.
“When you get criticised it’s not nice and you have to react by playing better and I think that’s what we did.”
