Gordon Staniforth refused to dwell too much on Liverpool LFC’s pre-season match-winner which came in controversial circumstances.

The Belles took the current Women’s Super League champions to the wire before Ellie Stewart headed home a last-gasp winner for the Reds in Saturday’s friendly.

The solitary goal came from a corner which the referee admitted should not have been awarded, Staniforth said after the match.

However, the new Doncaster boss was keen to move on and instead was delighted with his side’s performance.

“Very happy. To get beat here at Liverpool, the champions last year, with five minutes to go, I’m thrilled to bits with the performance,” he said.

“I think we need to look at the video [for the corner decision], but the referee has apologised because he said it wasn’t a corner. But it’s one of those things.

“They’ve put in a good goal but it’s a great performance from all us. In the first half, we had some great chances.”

The match in Merseyside saw new signings Reanne Thomas, a midfielder from Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United goalkeeper Shannon McCarney travel with their new team-mates.

Belles are next in competitive action against Copsewood Coventry on March 16 in the FA Women’s Cup before their season begins in April.
