Rep Team slip to bottom of league

Sheffield & Hallamshire FA U18 Representative Team suffered their second heaviest defeat of the season as they were comfortably beaten by this season’s cup finalists West Riding FA.

It was the second time the two sides have met since the New Year, after the visitors dumped the home side out of the cup in late January with a 3-1 victory.

The visitors started the game brightly, and found themselves in front within five minutes. A mix up in the Sheffield & Hallamshire defence allowed West Riding striker Kayden JACKSON to slot the ball home.

West Riding continued to press and deservedly doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, when Aston WEBSTER capitalised on a knock-down and placed the ball beyond the outstretched Sheffield & Hallamshire ‘keeper Spencer Russell.

Sheffield & Hallamshire rallied and pulled a goal back on 35 minutes, when Houghton Main midfielder Jack HILL nodded home a free-kick. The hosts should have pulled level just before the break but Danny Booth could only watch as his shot hit the post.

The game opened-up after the restart and both sides created chances from which they should have really capitalised. The best chance of the opening exchanges fell to Sheffield & Hallamshire’s Ryan Ruddiforth, but the young midfielder fired wide after being played through on goal.

The away side, whose strikers had been lively all night, extended their lead on 75 minutes, when Dale FEATHER placed the ball in the bottom corner. They then added a fourth ten minutes later, as Aodhan BROWNLEE scored from close range to cap an all-round performance.

The result means that Sheffield & Hallamshire FA currently sit bottom of the Association of Northern Counties League and go into their last game of the season looking to avoid the unwanted record of not winning a single league game all season.

The Rep Team are back in action on Monday 12 March at Sandy Lane, Worksop, when they will face fellow-strugglers Durham. Kick off 6.30pm.
