Stocksbridge were beaten 2-0 in their relegation encounter at Whitby Town despite the hosts being reduced to ten-men for the final 20 minutes.
The Steels only real chance of note in the first half came when Alex Callery’s firm drive proved too hot for the Whitby keeper to handle and he fumbled the drive before gathering it at the second attempt, with Andy Ring lurking.
However, Stocksbridge found themselves behind five minutes before the break when David McTiernan found a yard of space to guide a header from a right wing cross past Ben Scott.
Steels hopes of getting something from the game were raised when Whitby’s goal-scorer McTiernan was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Richard Haigh that left the defender unable to carry on.
It was the signal for Steels to push men forward but they couldn’t find a way through a resolute Town defence and were caught on the break in stoppage time when Ashley Davis sealed the points lifting a shot over Scott that the keeper just failed to keep out despite getting a hand to it.
